From emceeing into a pair of broken headphones in a mate‘s shed, to Deejaying at random night clubs as a teenager, then going on to establish a commercial recording studio in East London, David T Mené one way or the other has always been involved in music.
David T Mené aka Mené, is a London-based Music Producer | Audio Engineer and founder of Profonic Studios. As a teenager, Mené studied Sound Engineering at Lewisham College and soon after graduating Mené began to construct his own recording studio.
In 2009, Mené graduated from the University of East London, with a 2:1 B.A [Hons] degree in ‘Music Theory and Production’. Soon after graduating Mené went on to attend a level 3 production course at Urban Artist School, Urban Development. It was there where Mené was mentored by Audio Engineer, Darryl LaVictoire. LaVictoire has engineered mega hits for acts including: Craig David, Mis-Teeq and Blacksmith to name a few.
As a post-graduate, Mené has the opportunity to collaborate with singer/songwriter Shola Ama and writer/manager, Jo Perry [Labrinth, Loick Essien, Union J, Stooshé]. The track in question was called ‘The One’ and also featured Spoken Word Artist, MC Angel.
Mené then went on to produce and write several songs for X Factor finalist and BEFFTA award winner, Shylo [aka Robert Allen]. Working on Shylo’s project gave Mené the opportunity to explore/ develop his production and songwriting skills.
Towards the end of 2014, Mené had the chance to work with viral comic, Big Tipper and recorded/ mixed/ produced the vocals for Tipper’s track ‘Aunty’. The track had moderate success and was in rotation on several commercial radio stations, including: BBC Radio 1 and Reprezent Radio. After being on Soundcloud for only a month, ‘Aunty’ went on to clock over 400,000 plays.
During this time, Mené was also recording and producing vocals for the underground "Afro Hop" sensation, STP. To date Mené has produced and mixed STP’s mixtapes, ‘STP Mixtape Volume Two’ and ‘Summer Time Passion’. The demand for STP’s ‘Summer Time Passion’ mixtape at the time of release was so great it caused GRM Daily’s website to crashed and at the time, ‘Summer Time Passion’ was the most downloaded mixtape in GRM Daily’s history. Working on ‘Summertime Passion’ also gave Mené the opportunity to work with acts like, Adz & Shallow as well as multi MOBO winner and Glastonbury headliner, Stormzy.
In 2015, as Mené’s career continued to progress, he went on to open a commercial recording studio, Profonic Studios. Since establishing Profonic Studios, Mené has had the chance to work with recording artists from all around the world, including Nepal, Portugal, Albania, Romania, Italy, France, Nigeria and the USA. Consequently, these international collaborations gave Mené the capacity to expand upon his his skill set...
“I don’t necessarily need to understand what my international clients are rapping or singing ….to me music is music…it’s an expression that transcends language…”
As well as, writing/producing/mixing songs for himself and other recording artists, spanning many genres, Mené has also honed his skills in other recording disciplines. These disciplines include: working on vocal-over campaigns for well-known companies, collaborating with several London based, theatre production houses and undertaking projects for international promotional companies. Being exposure to all of these varied disciplines ultimately encouraged Mené to develop a highly diverse engineering/recording skill set, which Mené feels has contributed to his work ethic as a music producer/ audio engineer.
From having to deal with so many diverse styles in recording, production and musical genres, Mené was inspired to explore other musical styles outside of his roots in Hip-hop/ R’n’B.
In 2015, Mené released a Deep House track entitled ‘What Was Written’ featuring vocals from RnB singer, Leeanneah Lauren. The track gained a lot of support from various DJs on the "underground" circuit and shortly after its release Mené was approached to do several remixes for various acts including the 'International musical collaborative', Bass Adjustment.
After relocating Profonic Studios to east London in 2016 Mené has begun to focus his attention on setting up an online instrumental service, Profonic Beats. Profonic Beats will lease high quality, original beats to recording artists from all around the world. It’s been in development for a while but it’s coming VERY SOON!
